"IN THE MOMENT" - SINOPSIS
In the fifties, before the term "Design" was known in Portugal, Vítor da Silva made his debut in the "Século" newspaper's drawing room and collaborated with the "Diário de Lisboa". In the seventies he will bring a graphic modernity to the newspapers designed by himself: "Expresso" and "Tempo", and by the remodelling of "Diário de Notícias". The pressures of newspaper design, in a time when newspapers were made in the moment.
Rui Martins - Production / Direction / Interviews
Rui Martins studied Audiovisual Communication at the António Arroio School and holds a degree in Audiovisuals and Multimedia by ESCS (School of Communication and Media Studies). He has developed a work in video production and made his 60 minute debut documentary feature "No Momento" awarded with the "World Premiere Television Prize" at Avanca Film Festival 2018.
Ricardo Santos - Interviews / Revision
Ricardo Santos studied graphic design at the António Arroio school and was a student of Vítor da Silva's. He graduated in IADE and is a master in advanced typography by EINA (Barcelona). He teaches typography at ESAD.CR university (Caldas da Rainha),Vanarchiv 's designer is a founding member of the Tiponautas and Tipos das Letras type collectives. Along with Rui Martins, Ricardo Santos was responsible for the interviews on the documentary.
Vitor da Silva
Vítor da Silva was connected to the press world from the mid-1950's to the late 1970's as a graphic designer and illustrator. He created the original graphic image of "Expresso" and "Tempo" newspapers and developed work for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Vítor da Silva also worked in several agencies and taught at the António Arroio Art School, from 1966 to 1996 and ESCS - School of Communication and Media Studies, from 1992 to 2003.
Fernando Coelho
Fernando Coelho was the creator of the "Semanário"newspaper and was responsible for the re-design of newspapers; "Diário de Notícias", "Diário de Lisboa" and "Comércio do Porto". Fernando was a pupil of Vítor da Silva's at the António Arroio school in the early 1970s. Fernando teaches design at the IPT (Polytechnic Institute of Tomar).
Luís Ribeiro
Also known as "Master", Luís Ribeiro began his professional career as a lithographer for 20 years. He was then a student of Vítor da Silva's and a teacher at the António Arroio school in the early 1970s, and later chief graphic designer for the newspaper "Expresso" for the following thirty years.
Vítor da Silva & Newspaper Press Design
The documentary entitled "No Momento" (In The Moment) was shot between 2015 and 2017. The original idea arose from an interview covering the retrospective of the long career of Vítor da Silva, for its multiple facets as designer and illustrator.
From this original interview, his career in the world of the press, stood out from the rest, and thus, began a series of secondary interviews that culminated in the presentation of this 60 minutes documentary.
The film also counts on the participation of the National Press Museum in Oporto and with images of Lisgráfica workshop in Oeiras, as well as images provided by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The film footage was kindly provided by Doug Wilson, director of the documentary Linotype - The Film.
